Pet Adoption and Protection Center
Miami-Dade County Animal ServicesChallenge
Miami-Dade County Animal Services needed a very large shelter to accommodate their program, but constructing a new building of that size and finding property to accommodate it was very costly. Finding an existing building to renovate would also have challenges due to the unique demands of housing a large quantity of animals. To serve the volume of such a large metro area, they needed to drastically increase their spay/neuter surgical capacity and the capacity for dog housing and cat housing.
Results
To cut costs, an existing building was chosen with an adequate shell to meet the program. Modifications were made to the existing HVAC and plumbing design to meet the program’s needs, including lowering the ceilings to reduce the HVAC volume and designing a concealed drainage system above slab for the kennels. The new shelter increased the spay/neuter surgical capacity by more than 50 percent, dog housing by 25 percent, and cat housing nearly doubled.
